About the HSS Mural Project
The HSS Mural Project aims to create a series of outdoor murals on the Humanities and Social Science Building. These murals will combine the principles of public art, street art, and the core values of HSS. They will be installed on the four identical archways that flank two sides of the front of the Humanities building, with each archway providing 200 square feet of wall space.
To ensure that the resulting images represent the diverse voices of the HSS community and surrounding learning communities, the project will follow a participatory, community-engaged, and artist-driven process. This process will involve seeking input from the community to determine the final artwork and images that will be featured in each mural. The project also aims to establish strong partnerships with local artists and involve students in every aspect of the design in ways that are relevant and inclusive.
Meet our Artist and Collaborator Cynthia Luján
“I commit to foster dialogue and deepen belonging within communities to create inclusive, safe, and more accessible public spaces for all people as a practicing visual artist.” Cynthia Luján
Artist Cynthia Luján was born and raised on occupied Indigenous American lands by migrants and is of Mexican-American (Chicano), Guatemalan, and colonial descendance. Luján currently works nomadically in Southern CA and lives in unincorporated Los Angeles. She has a deep connection to Santa Ana and Long Beach communities. Luján creates mural projects and hosts art workshops that grow belonging to cultivate inclusive, accessible, and safe public spaces. Her daily commutes in contrast to her travels abroad to other nationstates Guatemala, Russia, China, Japan, & Mexico have influenced the visual lexicon of urban spaces that she obsesses about and that she incorporates into artistic themes.

Events
Join us on November 29th for an exciting Mural Kick-off Event with Artist Cynthia Luján!
We are launching the HSS Mural Project with a community art experience called Cyanotype with Cynthia! Come and witness the process of creating a cyanotype print in the sun, and even make your own. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that originated in the mid-1800s and was commonly used by engineers to produce copies of drawings or blueprints. This experience involves using light-sensitive coated paper and water to create a final print. The prints designed by HSS faculty, students, and staff will help shape the artist's final design concept.
Date: November 29th
Time: 12:00pm-2:00pm
Location: Humanities Terrace and Exterior Building Archway facing Aloha Java
We will provide a FREE lunch for the first 50 attendees, so please arrive early as supplies are limited.
